Here’s a formal-ish bit about me. I’m a writer based in the North East of England. I write fiction, poetry, memoir, and journalism. My work has been published in The i, NME, Notion Magazine, Litro, Hobart Pulp, Poems in Which, The Bohemyth, and others. My latest essay about bi-representation in noughties film and tv was published in The Bi-ble: an anthology of personal essays and narratives about bisexual identity.
In 2014, I completed an MA in Contemporary Film and Literature at Newcastle University. My dissertation topic was Curating The Word: Visual, Verbal and Linguistic Spaces in the poetry of Frank O’Hara. In the same year, I was awarded the ‘Best Young Writer’ Award and nominated for the ‘Best Writer’ category at the Blog North Awards. My blog, ‘the bellini jar’, doesn’t exist as it was but you can read one of my original posts here.
During the week I work in marketing for a technology startup so I write on weekends and whenever I can. Previous to my current job, I worked in my local independent cinema and as a freelance workshop facilitator. I still occasionally run creative writing workshops for young people and/or adults. The next one will be in Hull in June as part of a project run by artist and musician Jayne Dent.
I’m the founder of Papaya Press, an award-winning publishing project which brings together northern artists and writers to explore the space between art and literature. We host fun zine-making workshops and curate performances. In the past, we’ve worked with The Laing, The Late Shows, New Writing North and Durham Book Festival. Specifically, we champion female-identifying writers and artists. Earlier this year, we co-hosted an event with our friends at The Grapevine Zine in London at the Peckham Pelican.
In 2016, I was a recipient of the Northern Rock Foundation Talent Fund, a funding programme run by New Writing North targeting young people living in Newcastle upon Tyne. I’m a graduate of The Writing Squad and a member of The Table, a writing group for women and non-binary folk in the North East.
